Types of Wedding Ceremonies

Types of Wedding Ceremonies

Before you pick a location for your ceremony, decide what type of service you want.  There are two basic types of wedding ceremony:  A religious ceremony, or a civil ceremony.

Religious ceremonies are conducted by ministers, priests, rabbis, pastors... religious leaders who perform weddings as part of their formal duties.  Civil ceremonies are conducted by a person legally qualified to perform a marriage ceremony:  A judge, justice of the peace, civil celebrant....

If you and your fiancee are of different faiths, one way to resolve the problem of deciding which denomination you'll be married under is to use a civil celebrant.  You can still get married in a church or synagogue (if the church or synagogue will allow it, of course.)  Just because you use a civil celebrant doesn't mean you can't have an elaborate, expensive, and sophisticated service.  While you can go to the courthouse and get married, you certainly don't have to.

Civil celebrants are usually willing - for a fee, of course - to travel to whatever location you request.  They can also read prepared text, offer prayers... most civil celebrants will adjust to your wishes.  (And if a particular civil celebrant is unwilling to, find another one.)

If you're looking for a civil celebrant, usually your county or city offices can give you the names of a few.  When you call about a marriage license, ask for recommendations.

If you want a spiritual wedding but want it to be non-denominational, the Unitarian Universalist church, among others, offer non-denominational services for members and non-members.  Often pastors of small churches will be happy to perform a religious-based, non-denominational service, even if you're not a member of their church.
